Here are a few tips when using Microsoft Windows:
Never save important files to the same hard drive you have the operating system installed on. It's the most likley to fail.
Never use "My Doccuments" to store pictures, word doccuments, MP3s, or anything you don't want to loose.
If you only have one hard drive in your computer partition it off and save all the important data to the partition without the operating system. This will help a little.
Obviously you should have all the important stuff backed up. But who botheres?
Hope this little tip saves you some grief. I have lost loads of stuff over the years from hard drives breaking down, and from my experience it's easier to recover your data from another hard drive. The main reason being if you have to format and re-install the operating system you won't loose everything because all the important stuff will be stored on another hard drive.
Good luck!

Computer Maintenance and its importance
Computer maintenance is a very important aspect of owning and running a computer. Without performing any maintenance a computer can become slow, sluggish and worst of all hardware can begin to fail.
I have witnessed instances where people have lost masses of important data as well as having incurred costs to replace hardware within a computer, and this mostly from the lack of performing basic computer maintenance.
So what is computer maintenance and how does it help you? Well one form of maintenance that everyone has heard of is Virus Scanning. A virus scan is classed as a routine maintenance as it is performed (or at least should be) on a regular basis. Other forms of maintenance include, but are not limited to;
* Defragmentation * Complete system backup * File backups * Disk error checking * Internal cleaning of the tower unit * Ad-ware and Spy-ware scanning * Cleaning up of folders and directories (removing of uneeded files and a general sorting) * Uninstalling and removal of unused and uneeded programs * Operating System updates * Software Updates * Hardware upgrades
All the above are forms of Computer maintenance. Some are routine which would be performed on a regular basis, whilst others are non-routine and are performed only when required.
Later on I will be creating some tutorials which wil demonstrate on how to perform a few of these. But my advice is that if you do not currently perform any maintenance, it is definately worth starting now, as it will save on headaches and problems in the future.
