Currently using Stanton Final Scratch 2 for Djing.
FINALSCRATCH 2 is a hardware-software combination that allows digital music files on a computer to be controlled and mixed live using a conventional DJ setup (2 turntables (or CD players) and a mixer).
How did you come to the decision to use TRAKTOR DJ Studio? When did you first hear about the program?
I had just started Djing, and was using a combination of my desktop PC along with a CD player to mix. Not idea, but Alex Pepper told me about this new Final Scratch thing and he did some awsome mixe's with it so I thought I would try it.
What do you think about TRAKTOR? What are are the main advantages of TRAKTOR for you?
It lets me play and mix MP3's. It was the first software / hardware combination that I heard about that would let me do this. At the time USB soundcards for laptops wern't around.
What is your favorite feature?
Being able to type in a key word to find a song. When people ask me for a request I can be playing it by the time they have walked away. Well impressive. It also saves a log of every single track you played during the set. Sure you could write them all down, but just clicking a button to get a list of music you played during a night is awsome.
What kind of computer do you use for TRAKTOR? (laptop or desktop, processor, size of RAM, operating system, size of harddisk etc.)?
2.4Ghz Amilo Laptop OS: Win XP Pro, 512 MB RAM, 40 gigabyte harddisk. Could do with a bigger hard drive, but I really only use the laptop for Djing so it's OK for now.
Do you use a mouse or keyboard commands to trigger TRAKTOR? Do you use an external controller? or external DJ Mixers? If so, which one?
I use the keyboard to type in song names I'm searching for. Then the mouse to assign it to left or right deck or the preview player. Don't know enough about other hardware? Wouldn't know where to start?
Do you use TRAKTOR with audio software or hardware? If so, which
programs/pieces of equipment do you use? Which MIDI/Audio interface do you use?
Audio interface: No idea?
MIDI controller: No idea. Never even used a Midi controller. What would be the benefits?
Do you have special tips and tricks for working with TRAKTOR?
Back up your MP3 collection regularly. Window's isn't very stable and from my experience Laptop's break easily and I have had hard drive's and DVD drives that have died. So I take a spare laptop with me when Djing. Costly, but it's either that or not be an MP3 DJ.
Do you see advantages or disadvantages with TRAKTOR DJ as opposed to spinning with vinyl?
Yeah it's loads better when you don't use the timecode vinyl. Mine get dirty and scratched which leads to poor sound quality and jumps in the music. MP3s never wear out and you can carry 1000's with you unlike vinyl.
Bad Features:
Computers crash from time to time. Not good during a live gig.
Also some MP3s don't play so if you havn't tested them all before you can find the latest tune you have loaded as your top tune of the night won't play or even worse causes the program to freeze up.
Regrets:
Buying decks. But then again I had to have decks for FS1, now I just use the laptop don't really use the decks. If I would sooner use CD decks.
