First get a program called "#1 DVD Ripper" Then get the codec you wish to use. Personally I like the 3ivX codec in #1 DVD Ripper select the chapters you wish to rip, select the type of file output. The part where it says Default Volume can give you problems. If it's set on 1 it's too quiet and 3 can sometimes be too loud and distorted so I always set it to 0.

The best way to do it I find these days is to use Smart Ripper, then convert the VOB file with Xilisoft Video Converter 3.
With Xilisoft Video Converter 3 you can choose just about any format to save the video as.
