Businesses providing alcohol, hot food or entertainment after 11pm have until midnight on Saturday 6th August to apply for their licence to be automatically extended. But one out of every three are expected to miss the deadline, and they will have to make a fresh application that could be contested by residents. Those still without a licence on 24 November, when the Licensing Act 2003 comes into force, will have to close. Most of the 60,000 yet to apply are reportedly off licenses and takeaways. Virtually all pubs have applied for one of the government's new flexible licences, with most asking their local councils to extend their opening times by one or two hours. It will also cut down on the violence coz everyone won't be kicked out onto the streets at the same time.
