After DJing for over 25 years it's a love / hate relationship with playlists.
I've never used a playlist (what I mean by that is I have never planned out a set, it's all about the crowd - reading the room, the vibe of the party).
Im happy to take requestes during a set.
Im happy to be given a playlist for a function however I've found 90% of the time they do not work! However I've been surprised a couple of times and what has been requested has been great and got people dancing (Few and far between though) but it has made me more aware of different typed of music etc.
If you want to send me a list Im happy to play what you want (your paying at the end of the day, but your better off just plgging an MP3 player in if you going to do that?).
When other DJ's advertise as "play lists accepted" etc it usually means they are not very experienced, can't read a roomm can't get the feel of the party so need some help.
Without sounding too cheesey, music is personal - it can take you on an emotional journey. Sure I can play the "top hits" from XYZ, but I like to play stuff you've probably never even heard before and getting people dancing to something new and showing them a new experience is awesome feeling.
At the same time, nothing wrong with the whole room up dancing and singing along to "high ho silver lining".
