I use Virtual DJ to play my music video's. The fastest was is to use a program called "SmartRipper 2.41" This will rip each song on the DVD as individual .VOB files. Once in .VOB format they will play straight away in Virtual DJ. However the file sizes are preitty big so when you start getting loads you will need a massive hard drive (or two or three). Or... Do what I do and convert them to .MPEG files. Once they have been converted the quality is a bit less, but not noticeable in the pub on the plasma's or on the big screen projectors. There's a few programs you can use to convert video format's I'll find the one I use and send it you. Along with Smart Ripper.

Greetings Gaz!
New member here from Southern California. I sought you out from the Virtual D.J. forums, found your forums, and here we are.
About two years ago, I was a newbie with music video, and really only started investigating it based on the easy integration with Virtual D.J. At the time, VDJ 3.2 (I think) came with a .vob ripper that seemed to only work about half of the time. Combined with the huge file size (and the fact that it doesn't seem right to D.J. with compressed audio, but non-compressed video - when video files are much more massive to begin with - and that standard "audio" D.J.ing remains the bulk of what I do), I looked for rippers and the "right" compression. What I found was an old blog of yours on the VDJ forums that had helpful screen shots of #DVDRipper and a divx codec, with step by step instructions on how to use them. The output files were about 1/3rd the size of the .vob files, and looked terrific.
About 8 months later, upon recommendation of other friends, I switched over to .vob (for maximum quality and compatibility - the files play on pretty much any system - and load relatively fast in VDJ), using Smartripper. But I still have a couple thousand .avi files I ripped.
I don't perform VJing very often (yet), so when exactly the problems I'm about to describe began, I don't know.
I had this issue in VDJ 4.3, and I just upgraded from 4.3 to 5.0 (rev. 6). In 4.3, I would load one of my .avi files, ripped as per your blog and screenshots (even though I don't know what most of the settings even MEAN), and the entire program would LOCK UP for at least two minutes at a time, and then it would load the video and playback just fine. At first I suspected something about the divx codec having "expired" or something, but even if that happened, it shouldn't effect playback, should it? Now in 5.0, the videos load up just fine, but only the audio plays.
Any idea what I've done wrong, and how, short of ripping a large stack of DVDs all over again, how I can make everything work?
Thank you!

Hi Steve. Sorry to hear your having problems. Trust me I have had my share too. I have given up using the .avi format with Virtual Dj. It just doesn't work well on any system I have tried. Like you I have now started using VOBs, however I'm still not happy with the amount of space they take up on the hard drive so currently convert most video's to .mpg. I have another guide on my site somewhere that explains how to do it, I will put the link here when I find it. In the mean time the only thing I can think you could try is to go into Virtual Dj settings and change the file type for .avi files from "Video Decoder" to "Windows MediaPlayer Video Decoder" if that fails try the other's on the list. I will try to explain better when I have more time and Virtual Dj loaded up aswell. Config > Codecs: Highlight .avi and click "Change". Try www.xilisoft.comand a tutorial here: www.xilisoft.com/video-converter/tutorial.html

Here's something I wrote for my digital camera - explaining how to convert DVD's for playback. But the same principles apply to Virtual Dj. Click here to read it.

I downloaded a newer, trial version of the 3ivx codec, but the results are the same in VDJ 5.
I also downloaded the trial version the xilosoft video converter, and converted an .avi to a .vob. The resultant .vob shows no video in VDJ.

Do not convert .AVI to VOB. That won't help. You need to get the original DVD, rip the video's to VOB and then convert them to MPEG-4 with xilosoft video converter.
If you can't find your original DVDs or don't have time to go through them all you can convert .AVI to MPEG-4 again try xilosoft video converter. I have done this with some of mine, they play lots better and in most cases have a smaller overall file size.
Good luck.
