Can someone please give me some help on what to write about here?
I got a grade C with my answer to South Yorkshire Police (Most of it I made up). and a grade D when I applied to Notts police. A true answer, but I din't have anything else to write about.
Here's the question:
Q2 It is vitally important that police officers respect the lifestyle, culture or beliefs of others even if these differ significantly from the officer's own views.
Give an example of when you have shown respect for someone with a deep-rooted belief. This may be a religous, cultural, ethical or moral belief or some important aspect of their lifestyle. You will be assessed in this question on your understanding of, and sensitivity to, the difference you and this particular person had, and on how you adapted what you said or did.
Tips People have already given me:
The issue you choose MUST be about something that is a significant aspect of how we live our lives. The following are not: management styles, sports training styles, who is the best football team. These issues do not cut the the heart of things that affect our lives sifnificantly , even if you are Wolves or Chelea's biggest fan.
Although the question talks about you disagreeing with the other person, this is not a pre-requiite. The question says " and you may even have disagreed" , you don't have to have disagreed with them.
Don't just parachute in someone from a minority group, you must show undertstanding and adaption to some aspect of their diversity, not treat them as you do everone else, or defend them.
If you just say you treat everyone with respect you will fail.
If you say you haven't got an example, you will fail
One of the broadest answers relate to "lifestyle".
Lifestyle includes:
* drinking - are you t-total, and your friend drinks but didn't like it?
* smokers - your housemate smoked and it annoyed you
* people who speed
* a comment someone made
* a meat eater - are you vegetarian?
Other examples for Q2 can be:
Religion
Vegetarinism/Vegan
Politics
Abortion
Personal hygeine
Disability
Child rearing
Ethnicity
Blood sports
Whaling
Smoking
Alcoholism
Contraception
But not disagreements over management style, coaching style, football, TV Soaps, who wants to be a millionaire etc ( I have seen all of these examples).
Key points to this question are to: mention that you took the other persons feelings into account, you thought about how they felt and how they may react. You thought about whether it affected you that much. You considered how it may be best to talk to this person, what happened afterwards? etc....
(i) Tell us how the situation arose. [max 200 words]
(ii) Which aspects of the difference did you find most difficult to deal with? [max 150 words]
(iii) Tell us in detail what you did. [max 200 words]
(iv) What did you learn from this experience? [max 200 words]
(v) How were you able to adapt what you did to meet the other person's needs? [max 150 words]
